You will now need to have someone use the mic as it will be used in the performance, i.e. either speaking or playing into it. It is important that the loudest sounds are reproduced during this test. Whilst the mic is being used, you will be watching the led ladder (see Fig 2) and adjusting the gain pot so that the loudest sounds light the led ladder to the +6dB or perhaps +9dB. The actual figure you choose will depend on your experience with your system, but in general, err on the side of caution. I would then suggest that you back the pot off another notch so that you have room to increase it (see later). Set the PFL switch to 'off'. Repeat this procedure with all of the inputs to your mixer. Step 3 Choose an input to set the output/ amplifier input gain. This is usually a CD that you are familiar with, but it could be one of the mic inputs. The only problem with having a person providing the input is that they need to provide a consistent level, which is sometimes difficult. Anyway, choose your input and bring the master fader on this input up to the 0dB position (see Fig 3). This may be marked '0dB', or perhaps 'U' for unity gain. Do the same for the master faders. |
