Attaching Radio Mic Heads - 1

We are often asked what is the best way to attach lavallier microphone heads to performers so that they are concealed but also able to produce a good sound.

Positioning of the radio mic is usually a compromise between concealment and sound quality and/or level, but as a general rule, it is better to try and fix it to the head, as any fixing to the body means that there will be a variation in level and timbre as the performer moves their head. For example, if the microphone is fixed to the lapel on the right,  whenever the performer turns to the left, the vocal sound will be projected away from the microphone and therefore the level, particularly the higher frequencies, will be much reduced.

When fixing to the head, we shall consider three specific situations which will give you an idea of the possibilities and techniques.

  1. Fixing Under A Wig
  2. Fixing To An Actor With Hair
